When she couldn’t hide him any longer she got a little basket-boat…and placed the child in it. Then she set it afloat in the reeds at the edge of the Nile.
– Exodus 2:3 MSG
Which mother can trust to put her newborn baby in a basket and set it afloat down a river?
Well, the Bible tells us that’s what Moses’s mother did. Pharoah, the ruler of Egypt, had grown alarmed at how rapidly the Hebrews had multiplied. So he commanded all the male Hebrew children to be killed at birth.
All mothers love their children. The Bible tells us that Moses was a beautiful child, and there was something special about him. No wonder his mother hid him for as long as she could, until she could no longer do so. Then she set him in a basket on the River Nile.
How was she able to do that? Because she trusted in the Lord.
She didn’t know what would happen to her baby, but she trusted enough in the Lord’s goodness to believe that He would watch over and protect her child.
Her faith wasn’t perfect, because we read that her daughter stood by the riverbank to see what would become of the baby.
But the Lord never fails to reward even the smallest faith in Him. He is pleased and delighted that you would think well enough of Him to put your trust in Him. That’s how lowly, loving, and yet awesome He is.
The Bible tells us that Pharoah’s daughter found the baby among the reeds and fell in love with him, even though she saw that it was one of the Hebrew children. She took him into the palace, named him Moses, and raised him as her son.
But wait, there’s more. Remember Moses’s sister who was watching by the side?
She came to Pharoah’s daughter when she saw her cradling her baby brother, and asked her if she would like to get a nurse for the baby. When Pharoah’s daughter said yes, she went and got her mother – Moses’s own mother – whom Pharoah’s daughter hired to nurse the child!
Not only did her baby not come to harm, but he was assured a life of comfort and luxury far from suffering, in Pharoah’s palace itself. On top of that, she even got more time with her beloved baby, safely nursing him and seeing him grow – and getting paid for it. And Moses would later be appointed by the Lord to deliver his people the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt.
Oh, how the Lord rewarded Moses’s mother for trusting in Him.
Beloved, the Lord will never leave you wanting or shortchanged when you put your trust in Him.
No matter how little or weak your faith may be, just as He did for Moses’s mother, He will surely reward you above and beyond what you hope for when you entrust your children – or whatever it is you care about – into His mighty hands!
Because when you encounter Jesus, you encounter grace.
