‘Labour’ is kind of a strange word under grace. Romans 11:6 says “And if by grace, then it is no longer of works (i.e. our own labour); otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works (i.e. our own labour), it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work” (additional emphasis mine).

Jesus famously said, “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Under the new covenant of grace, we aren’t called to labour and try to work things out or be good on our own efforts. Rather, we are called to rest in His labour that has already been completed at the cross.

The one labour God calls us to do under the new covenant of grace is to “labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief” (Hebrews 4:11, KJV).

Grace isn’t cheap. We don’t need to labour under grace because Jesus did everything that needed to be done, for us. Though it costs us nothing to receive and rest in it, it cost Him everything to give it. Grace isn’t cheap – it is priceless.

The best way to honour His priceless gift is to receive it gladly, and rest in it. And find out more about who He is, and who He is to you.

Because when you encounter Jesus, you encounter grace.
